First, lets start off by defining what I mean by networking for business growth:

I want to tell you about a small accounting firm I know of which joined a local business networking group I am a member of. This accounting firm was just getting started and the owner is a fairly young guy, straight out of college and looking to establish a name for himself in a tough industry. Like any business owner, he initially struggled to attract new clients, and he really didn’t understand how to promote his business to the world. After deciding to join this networking group however, he was able to connect with other local business owners and build relationships through regular meetings and events that we have from time to time.

Now, I like the guy, and truth be told if I wasn’t already so entrenched with my own accountant, I would probably switch to him. Others I know of have, just because we like him. In other words, through the power of nothing more than getting together with the group and shooting the breeze, as they say, this guy has now earned himself some steady clients and is officially in business. That’s the power of networking for business growth, and the success of this dude’s newly formed accounting firm demonstrates how networking can be a powerful tool for driving business growth, particularly for a small business like his which was looking to establish itself within the local community.

So how do you get your head around not doing everything yourself, as a business owner/operator, and start networking and freeing yourself to be the business owner/promoter? The answer is you need to make the shift within your mindset.

As new business owners, our minds and thoughts are often consumed with what we don’t have. We focus the money we are spending, and how long it takes to come back in. We focus on the ever mounting tasks in front of us, and all of the things we still need to do before we can have everything perfect and ready. In other words, we focus on scarcity, fear of failure, and busy work. By shifting your mindset from that of the business operator to that of the business promoter, you will actually be more well equipped to sustain the business in the long run. Start by getting in front of more business opportunities. As a business owner, you should be putting out some sort of revenue producing capable offer a minimum of 3 times every day. A supper easy way to do this is to get involved in networking. Stop trying to get everything ready. Get out there and sell it. Get the business first, not second. Otherwise, you may end up finding out there is little interest in your offer and have wasted time and money on perfecting a business process that has no chance of a return.

When shifting from a mindset as the business operator to that of the business promoter, here are 3 things you should be sure to focus some time on.

Number 1: Focus on abundance.

It’s important to shift your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance. Instead of viewing networking as a competition for limited resources, see it as an opportunity to create mutually beneficial relationships. Approach new connections with an open mind and a willingness to help others, and you’ll be surprised at how much more successful your networking efforts can be.

Number 2: Focus on helping others.

It’s also crucial to shift your mindset from one of selling out of desperation to one of helping and serving others through your experience and knowledge, based on their needs. Instead of trying to push your products or services onto others, focus on building genuine connections and relationships. Listen to their needs, and then offer them the solution only if you have one to solve it. This will add value to your credibility and your offers, and garner support from others. You’ll naturally attract more business and referrals. Remember, people do business with those they know, like, and trust.

Number 3: Don’t be a perfectionist.

It’s important to shift your mindset from one of perfection to one of progress. Instead of waiting until everything is perfect before taking action, embrace the concept of “done is better than perfect.” Take imperfect action, learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward. The most successful entrepreneurs and networkers are those who are willing to take risks, learn from, and tweak their results along the way. Keep your focus on promoting your offers at least 3 times each day and worry about the details down the line. By shifting your mindset to one of abundance, service, and progress, you’ll be well on your way to effective networking and business growth.

Well, that’s our show for today folks. Remember to approach new connections with an open mind and a willingness to help, a focus on building genuine relationships, and embracing the concepts of imperfect action and growth.
